The Surface Book 2 is on the way, so time to reap the benefits on the previous generation.

Is this deal for me?

Microsoft just announced the Surface Book 2 last week, and you can already find discounts on the first edition. Right now, you can get the Surface Book with a 512GB SSD and Intel Core i5 processor for $1,599 at Microsoft. This particular configuration with 8GB RAM isn't available in a lot of places, but retailers like Best Buy are still selling the 16GB version for $2,300. You can find a similar price if you're willing to go through third parties on Amazon, but who wants to do that with that much money?

The budget version of the Surface Book, which has mostly the same specifications but a 128GB SSD, is down to $1,199. Best Buy has matched that price. Third parties could save you money on this one, if you want to take that risk.

The Surface Book comes with Windows 10 Pro and a 30-day trial of Office. The display is 13.5-inches with a 3000x2000 resolution and 227 ppi. The battery life lasts for 12 hours playing videos (longer if not). It has a 10-point multi-touch touchscreen and comes with the Surface Pen. The ports include two USB ports, a card reader, headphone jack, and mini DisplayPort. The front camera is 5 MP and the rear camera is 8 MP. There's microphones on both sides, too.

It comes with a one-year warranty.

TL;DR

  • What makes this deal worth considering? - It took an entirely new generation to get released for the Surface Book to see any real discounts. This is a big change in price, and if you've been thinking about getting a Surface this is the way to go.
  • Things to know before you buy! - The Surface Book 2 is coming out soon. It's going to cost a lot more, but the improvements could be worth it if they matter to you.
